The 12 and 18-ounce containers are designed specifically for kids. In bottles designed for small hands, the 12 and 18 ounce bottles are available with sippy cup lid adapters along with the other sports cap options, and weigh just 6 and 8 ounces respectively. Adult sized 27 and 40 ounce Kanteens weigh just 8 and 11 ounces respectively, and are available with a choice polypropylene or steel caps. The openings are large enough to fit ice cubes, and the slim bottle design fits in most cup and bottle holders. Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel?
Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory. Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen?
No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame. Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?

Good overall, but problems with lids December 3, 2008
I bought two 18 oz Kanteens, one with a loop lid and the other with a flat lid. Though the Kanteen is a good size and easy to hold and clean, the lids have been a problem. The flat lid doesn't always feel like an air-tight seal, probably because of the metal-on-metal connection. It is, however, easier to open than the loop lid, which is very difficult to open unless you have very strong hands or a screwdriver handy.

This is my first stainless steel water bottle (18 oz, with poly loop cap), and I really like it. No more deformed plastic bottle / bad tasting water! The only down side is that the water gets warmer on hot days and cool on cold days. but plastic water bottles have similar problems too.

Some reviews said the water has a metallic taste. I have not noticed that but it might be because I have the sport cap so I don't put my mouth against the can. I have no problem getting the water out like I do with my neoprene bottles. I always had to partially unscrew the cap so I could suck the water out and then it would leak. With the kanteen I twist it ever so slightly and it comes out fine. I'll never go back to plastic.

I thought myself to be one of those people who are sensitive to the metallic taste of the water in stainless steel container. Fortunately, I didn't taste anything metallic and only clean tasting water.

I'm very happy with the bottle, but it's a little awkward to drink out of. I'll order a sport top next time.
